Dear Scouters,
We are all aware of the incredible devastation and loss of life in the Southeast on Wednesday, April 27. So very many people have lost loved ones and homes and, among these, we're sure that many are Scouting families in the impacted states of Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee. The death toll and destruction is simply staggering.
Among the communities hardest hit was Tuscaloosa, AL. We're relieved to report that the local council office and staff was spared. The office is now being used as a collection point for donations of food etc. Their camp is being used as a staging area by the Alabama State Police. Their website says it all:
http://www.bwc-bsa.org/openrosters/view_homepage.asp?orgkey=2295
In the Chattanooga tri-state TV viewing area, 78 people in Tennessee, NW Georgia and NE Alabama have lost their lives, in addition to the terrible destruction of homes and businesses. Nearly 100,000 are without power in the Chattanooga area alone and will be for some time. It's being described as the worst disaster in the history of the Tennessee Valley.
The Cherokee Area Council in Chattanooga is also responding:
http://www.cherokeeareabsa.com/openrosters/view_homepage.asp?orgkey=791
This is our opportunity to rally support.
We're encouraging our entire Northeast Region Scouting Family to support the efforts of the American Red Cross and Salvation Army as they work hard to bring comfort and support to those in our Southeastern states. Contributions may be sent to either your local chapters or through the BSA web page: http://scouting.org/AlertTornado.aspx.
Please be as generous as you can.

In April, the Del-Mar-Va Council approved over $22,000 in camperships (camp scholarships) to scouting families in need. We are proud to be able to provide assistance to scouts and ensure they get the outdoor experiences and memories that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
Camperships are a direct benefit of our Family Friends of Scouting campaign and popcorn sales. On behalf of each of the scouts who recieved camperships, thank you!

BeAScout.org is a tool to connect families interested in joining Scouting directly with your unit. Using their address, anyone can find the units in their neighborhood on a Google map. It is imperative for each unit to ensure their http://www.beascout.org/ info is correct and up to date especially since this can be a family’s first interaction with Scouting. This website will also be on all marketing materials for Fall Recruitment.
The top youth-interacting leader (Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, Crew Advisor), the Committee Chair, and the Chartered Organization Representative will always be able to access this tool. However, you can change who the contacts are on BeAScout.org to any registered adult. Whether you are an expert, or just learning about how to use this site, the link below will provide instructions for how to navigate through the system and how to update your unit’s info online. You have the opportunity to share details like where your unit meets, the days and times of the week you meet, and what activities you like to do. This way, a parent can compare the units in a neighborhood and choose the best match.
When a new Scout is interested in joining you will receive an email announcing your “new lead.” You can then sign in to My Scouting and learn more about your potential new Scouts family and invite them to your next meeting. You can return to this database of new Scouts at any time.
Right now all units are on BeAScout.org, but you want to be sure that the information represented is the information you would like to share with new families. Please update your units contact person, phone number, email, and info by using the following instructions:

At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours long.
Each year, more than 3.5 million people in more than 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 19 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, we are creating a world with more birthdays – a world where cancer never steals another year of anyone’s life.
The Relay For Life events of Delmarva can serve as a great way for your scouts to get involved in our local communities. By forming a team and fundraising, or volunteering day-of, your scouts will gain great leadership and team building skills while helping a very important cause. Please contact your local American Cancer Society Staff partner at the email address listed next to the event you would like to participate and/or volunteer at for more information.
